We are excited to share this community lot from Magarciy and a group of small coffee producers surrounding the town of Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala. Sitting along the shores of beautiful Lake Atitlán, this region is home to a tight-knit Tzutujil indigenous community where many families have been cultivating coffee for generations. Farms here are incredibly small, averaging only 0.3 to 0.5 hectares, and coffee is often grown alongside avocado and other crops that provide both shade and additional sources of income.
Magarciy is a family-run business that works directly with these small producers and provides an important connection between their farms and the larger coffee market. The family was originally part of a local cooperative where they gained experience processing and selling coffee. When the cooperative eventually dissolved, Magarciy continued the work, providing local farmers with a reliable place to sell their harvest. Today, José Ramirez helps lead the organization while also bringing the next generation into the family business. His son Carlos works as a cupper and roaster and is part of a growing group of young coffee professionals helping carry Magarciy into the future.
This coffee is a washed process lot made up of several varieties grown between 1,570 and 2,000 meters above sea level. After harvest, the coffee is sorted and depulped before fermenting for approximately 24 hours. It is then washed and slowly dried on patios for 12 to 15 days, with frequent turning to ensure even drying. The result is a beautiful representation of Lake Atitlán and, more importantly, the collective work of a community of small producers whose individual harvests come together to create something much larger.
