This coffee comes from Sironko Station, a processing hub operated by Mountain Harvest at the base of Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda. While most coffee in the region has traditionally been processed at individual farms, Sironko represents a different approach. Farmers from some of the mountain’s most remote communities deliver freshly harvested cherries to the station, where Ibrahim Kiganda and his team oversee processing with a level of consistency and quality control that has helped elevate perceptions of Ugandan coffee on the global stage. Mountain Harvest is doing much more than processing coffee. Their work is centered on creating long-term opportunities for farming communities through regenerative agriculture, education, and economic development. They invest heavily in training both farmers and young professionals, helping build expertise in areas like quality control, agronomy, finance, and processing. In a country where the average coffee farmer is nearing retirement age, Mountain Harvest is helping create new pathways into the coffee industry while supporting producers in strengthening their farm businesses. This lot was produced using a honey process, where the fruit is removed from the coffee cherry but a layer of sticky mucilage is left intact during drying. At Sironko, the coffee is carefully dried in stages on raised beds before being stabilized and prepared for export. The result is a coffee that reflects both the rich growing conditions of Mount Elgon and the thoughtful work happening behind the scenes to shape a stronger future for Ugandan coffee.
